Sean Hurley married a centuries-old Irish Soda Bread recipe with the one his family baked from memory to create Hurley's Boston Soda Breads.
The original Irish soda breads appeared during the 19th century, when a ban on yeast designed to thwart illegal whiskey production forced bakers to turn to bicarbonate of soda as a leavening agent. Like scones and crumpets, Irish soda breads are baked in a griddle or skillet.
Each Hurley's bread is made to order and individually baked in a well-seasoned skillet, creating a moist and sweet cake bread with a golden, breadlike crust. Hurley's unique flavors and careful production helped them earn a "Best Bread in Boston" rave from Delta Air Lines in early 2005. |
